Actor and wrestler Dave Bautista is a huge fan of the Gears of War games, and has been pushing for a while now to get a movie adaptation of the series off the ground. Earlier this year he tweeted that he has “tried everything” to make a Gears of War movie happen, but that his efforts had been futile. But while that particular project is a non-starter, there is some good news: Bautista is entering the digital world of the game, as a playable character.
“It’s about damn time,” he said on Twitter.
His inclusion in the game is the result of a collaboration between Xbox and WWE: fans will be able to play as Bautista from September onwards, after WWE’s Clash of Champions event. But Bautista will only appear as a playable character for a limited time: the promotion ends on October 28.
The Gears of War games are third-person shooters which follow lead character Marcus Fenix in his mission to protect humanity from a race of nefarious reptiles. Of course, Bautista is an old pro when it comes to kicking alien ass: his most famous film role to date has been Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the final two Avengers movies.
“We started with the fantasy of ‘Bautista as Marcus,’ putting Bautista into Marcus’ armor, and starting with Marcus’ script. Then we added elements of ‘The Animal’ Bautista into his voice performance and onto his look by adding his signature Hollywood shades to his character,” director Rod Fergusson told Xbox.com. “Bautista was great in the booth and I can’t wait for Gears and Bautista fans alike to stomp some Swarm as The Animal.”
