PALM DESERT, CA —Riverside County’s Coachella Valley is joining dozens of communities nationwide shining a spotlight on prostate cancer, with the area’s “1st Annual ZERO to End Prostate Cancer 5k Run/Walk” set for Saturday, Sept. 14 in Palm Desert.
The fundraising event, set to begin at 7 a.m. at the Palm Desert Civic Center, will include a wellness expo with free health resources, plus fun family activities, the run/walk race, a kids’ dash and a celebrity guest speaker — actor, writer, producer and prostate-cancer survivor Dan McDougall.
Prostate cancer takes the life of an American man every 17 minutes, according to event organizers, who added that the area fundraising effort is co-hosted by Desert Medical Imaging and Valley Urology and Palm Valley Pain Management.
“The ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk rallies communities and gives participants a voice in
the fight to end prostate cancer,” said Jamie Bearse, CEO of ZERO, the national non-profit
whose goal is to create Generation ZERO – the first generation of men who are free of
prostate cancer. “We’re making prostate cancer a national priority. The Run/Walk series is a
way to mobilize the prostate cancer community and raise funds for patient support
programs to ensure that no man has to face prostate cancer alone.”
Race categories include a 5k Run/Walk, Kids’ Dash for Dads, and a “Snooze for Dudes” virtual-participation option for those who want to contribute without attendance. Participants
receive a T-shirt, free food and awards, resources and the opportunity to connect with others
who are impacted by the disease, organizers said.
The event’s ceremony for patients and survivors will feature survivor and key speaker McDougall, whose acting credits include Fargo, Hell on Wheels, Brokeback Mountain and Heartland .
Additional celebrity guests will include Harrison & Chris Sands, Welterweight Boxing Champion Tomas Dulorme and News Channel 3’s Patrick Evans who will serve as emcee.
At the “Access Expo,” attendees can inquire about medical and prevention solutions with pharmaceutical and health reps, plus take advantage of on-site screenings with medical professionals.
Dads and their little ones can join the “Kids’ Superhero Dash for Dad,” where each little racer will receive a superhero cape and meet mascot”Eraticator.”
Also on hand will be the La Quinta High School cheerleading squad and the Cathedral
City High School jazz band, with marines from the 29 Palms Marine Corps Base with a special flag presentation.
Local organizations joining the effort include: Valley Urology; the Auen Foundation; Desert Oasis Healthcare; Kerrigan & Will Family Medical Group; Reinhart Pain Management; Eisenhower
Health; Desert Prostate Specialists; AVSU; State Farm’s John Ford and Cindy Piper Agents;
News Channel 3; SR Social Media; and Desert Health.
