PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Survivors and supporters are taking action in the fight against breast cancer. CBS3 and Susan G. Komen Philadelphia are teaming up for Sunday’s More Than Pink Virtual Walk.
For the first time in its 30-year history, the Susan G. Komen Philadelphia walk to raise money for breast cancer research has gone virtual.
The thousands that usually line the Art Museum steps on Mother’s Day has been replaced with a sparse crowd on this June morning.
The coronavirus pandemic forced organizers to take a different approach to the mission. Encouraging virtual walks throughout the community.
“You’ll see the community walking in 15 counties safely with their families and sending their messages to us and we’ll share them on all the social media,” Elaine Grobman, CEO of Susan G. Komen Philadelphia, said.
The virtual More Than Pink Walk will be taking place over the course of 12 hours with longtime sponsors like Wawa promoting the cause.
“It’s important to a lot of us personally, myself included. Breast cancer has touched so many lives, we have over 35,000, 40,000 Wawa associate, it’s impacted probably all of us,” Lynn Hochberg said.
Just four breast cancer survivors acted as ambassadors to kick off the virtual walk. They represent the thousands that go unseen.
“I’m really grateful that they are doing something because I’m so afraid that because it’s virtual and the Mother’s Day event didn’t happen, that people are not really engaged in it,” Loralei Mcglad, a breast cancer survivor, said. “Because for me, it’s out of sight, out of mind and so I’m really happy they’re doing this.”
However scaled back this year’s walk had to be, Komen’s mission to save lives remains bigger than ever.
“We’re not done, we’re still fighting and whether this is virtual or real-time, Susan G. Komen is here,” Grobman said.
Remember, you can turn your Sunday stroll into a power walk by registering for the virtual walk, which is happening until 8 p.m. Sunday.
