Merizo Mayor Ernest T. Chargualaf remains in the intensive care unit at Guam Memorial Hospital after suffering two strokes early Monday afternoon, according to Arthur T. San Nicolas, a family friend who spoke on behalf of the family.

San Nicolas said that a CT scan and other medical examination indicated that immediate drug treatment broke up the clot causing the stroke, but an EKG examination also indicated the mayor was suffering from atrial fibrillation, a quivering or irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications.

Chargualaf will be monitored at the intensive care unit for the next two to three days for potential swelling of the brain.

San Nicolas said no visitors to the mayor will be allowed so he can rest according to the medical staff and members of his family, who told San Nicolas the mayor is talking to them and regaining strength.

“He can talk, but testing is being done every two hours to determine if there’s any swelling of the brain,” San Nicolas said.

Mayor Chargualaf was elected in 2008, and re-elected in 2012 and 2016. He has filed papers with the Guam Election Commission to run again this year.
