“We don’t decide between surgery or radiation based on better chance for cure, but there’s other things that go into it like side effects and convenience, personal preference,” Brookland said. “If you have an early stage cancer, then surgery and radiation are equally good choices. If you have a very advanced cancer, the you usually can’t do surgery. But the lower-risk cancers, you can choose between surgery and radiation most of the time. If you have surgery, then usually you don’t need to have radiation afterwards.”
