Edward Chu, MD, MMS, has been named director of Albert Einstein Cancer Center.

Chu also will serve as vice president for cancer medicine at Montefiore Medicine — which comprises Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine — as well as professor of medicine and professor of molecular pharmacology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Chu’s appointment will take effect Oct. 1.

“Dr. Chu has exceeded all our expectations for filling this critically important position,” Gordon F. Tomaselli, MD, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz dean at Einstein, said in a press release. “Not only has he demonstrated excellence in clinical care, research and drug development, but he is also a committed mentor, dedicated to training the next generation of physician-scientists who are so important to advancing the field of cancer research and treatment.”

Chu currently serves as deputy director of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Hillman Cancer Center. He also is co-leader of the cancer center’s cancer therapeutics program and director of its phase 1 program, as well as chief of the division of hematology-oncology at University of Pittsburgh.

He has developed and led several phase 1 and phase 2 clinical trials, with an emphasis on colorectal cancer and other gastrointestinal malignancies.

“We are honored to have a physician of Dr. Chu’s caliber joining us,” Philip O. Ozuah, MD, PhD, president and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, said in the release. “His extraordinary talents as a clinician, researcher and teacher make him the ideal candidate to lead our clinical cancer program.”
