For the first time in two decades, the Texas State Board of Education is planning to revise schools’ sex education policy.

The board voted last week to teach seventh and eighth grade students to “analyze the effectiveness and the risks and failure rates … of barrier protection and other contraceptive methods in the prevention of STDs, STIs and pregnancy,” as well as the importance of abstinence, as reported by Aliyyah Swabi for the Texas Tribune.

What students won’t learn about, though, is the importance of consent or anything about gender identity and sexual orientation.

Former and current Texas public school students said during a public hearing in June that they learned little, if any, facts or tips surrounding sex and asked that comprehensive sex education, including lessons directly related to LGBTQ+ issues, be added to the school curriculum.

But most Republicans on the board said they would rather let local school districts add LGBTQ+ issues to their own health education policies only if they chose to do so, the Tribune reported.

They instead opted to teach students to prevent “all forms of bullying and cyberbullying such as emotional, physical, social and sexual.”

Democrats on the board argued that middle schoolers should be able to grasp the concept of consent even if they’ve never been sexually active, but Republicans denied that motion as well.

The revised policy is expected to take a final vote in November.
