GOSHEN – What started as a way to support a very close family friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer, Evangelia Gronner (Eva) and Rebecca Serna (Becca) of Goshen began their charitable work by creating bracelets and selling at their school, at their parent’s work places and even set up a table to sell their goods at the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Fast forward to 2020 — nine years after the girls began their annual effort through “Best Friends Raising Money for a Cure” — the two Goshen High School seniors are at it once again and expecting to raise thousands of dollars to support the American Cancer Society.
Growing up as a philanthropic pair, the two best friends have shifted from crafting loom bracelets and key chains to creating chocolate covered pretzels emblazoned with pink sprinkles and ribbons this year.
Their crispy treats were the highlight of the weekend at Chester’s Tin Barn Brewing where the girls set up a table to sell their pretzels in support of breast cancer awareness month. With hundreds of pretzels individually packaged in pink, the young women were astounded by the generosity of patrons who would overpay for the treats after hearing why the girls are committed to the cancer fight.
Breast cancer became very personal to the Gronner family as Eva’s mother’s dearest friend was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. Affectionately known as “Aunt Jennifer”, to both young girls – in 4th grade at the time – the two felt compelled to help. After a long battle, Jennifer’s cancer metastasized and sadly, succumb to cancer in November 2016. According to the American Cancer Society, 17,540 New York residents will be diagnosed and 2,430 will die of breast cancer this year alone.
The girls continue their annual effort in her memory, while supporting and honoring breast cancer survivors across Orange County.
Today, the Goshen High School seniors are preparing a pretzel purchase drive through at the school’s parking lot at 222 Scotchtown Avenue. The public is invited to drive by and pick up the pink pretzels, while supporting the American Cancer Society. Pretzels are $2 each and donations of any size are appreciated.
