Oncology Nurses Show Care and Kindness Beyond Expectations

A patient with cancer discusses how one oncology nurse helped guide his cancer treatment to a better place.

Some healers touch our hearts with care and kindness beyond any expectations. Lindsey Roy, RN, is that exceptional nurse in my life.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer 12 years ago, with the news that I should not expect more than three additional years of life. I determined I would beat this disease with compliance to medical protocol, adherence to new dietary needs and spiritually uplifting prayer and meditation. Eight years into treatment, our oncology center in Dallas moved into a new building. About that time, Lindsey joined the oncology staff.

While I had appreciated the many wonderful nurses, who cared for me through 10 years of chemo treatments, Lindsey stood out. She is professional, attentive to details and watches her charges for anything that might be amiss. She is kind and fun, making treatment days more pleasant for all who are around her. Did I mention she is a natural beauty, too? Over time, I discovered that her mom, an oncology nurse in another state, was her inspiration to become a registered nurse. Her mother and I are the same age, so I feel a bit like a well-cared-for mother figure in her care.

I am thankful to be able to say that my treatments continue, and this chronic disease is currently stable. She is part of the miracle of extended life that I am experiencing. Lindsey will always hold a special place in my heart.
