Tiger King star Jeff Lowe was airlifted to a hospital after suffering a stroke in an Oklahoma casino and now believes he may have been poisoned.
Tiger King star Jeff Lowe was recently airlifted to a hospital after suffering a stroke. Tiger King is the widely successful Netflix documentary series that follows eccentric tiger breeders and wildlife conservationists’ lives, with many twists and turns along the way. An overnight success, the show became a cultural phenomenon upon its release during quarantine, captivating viewers with the previously unknown world of the big cat industry. While the heart of the story is Joe Exotic, a unique big cat breeder from Oklahoma who once claimed to be the most prolific tiger breeder in the United States, the show focuses on several different characters and zoos.

The docuseries details Exotic’s long-time rivalry with fellow tiger owner and animal activist Carole Baskin, who accuses Exotic of breeding his tigers for-profit and continuously attempts to shut down his business. The bitter feud escalates to Exotic trying to have Baskin killed in a murder-for-hire plot, ending with him in prison. Along with Baskin and Exotic, the series profiles other outlandish characters, such as the cult-like leader Doc Antle, reality television producer Rick Kirkham, and businessman Jeff Lowe, most remembered for betraying Exotic. Lowe initially stepped in to help Exotic, who struggled financially to keep his zoo, The Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, open. However, after putting money into the park, Lowe bought it out and has owned it since. A feud with PETA caused Lowe to shut the park down back in August 2020. In November, Lowe was also accused of violating the Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act for inhumane treatment of the animals.
Now Lowe is recovering from a stroke that caused him to be airlifted to a hospital on March 18. TMZ reported that the Tiger King star’s wife Lauren found Lowe unresponsive in an Oklahoma casino, and he was airlifted to a hospital in Texas. “I thought he was dying in my arms,” Lauren told TMZ. Lowe is now home recovering after spending three days in the hospital.
While doctors have been unable to find the cause of the stroke, Lowe and his wife believe that his drink may have been poisoned by a “strange man” that approached them earlier while on a dinner date. They told TMZ that the man approached them and said he knew them and even knew their favorite drink orders. The couple has not reported their suspicions to the police, and Lowe’s blood and urine samples came back negative for commonly abused drugs, but they believe the man may have drugged Lowe with something less common.
Lowe has undoubtedly been at the center of many controversies lately, but it sounds like this situation was nearly life-threatening. Despite his controversial storyline on Tiger King, fans are likely glad to hear that Lowe is recovering from such a bizarre incident.
