(KAKE) – In just under two months, Andover senior, Hayden Hirt, will graduate high school.

But for now, his focus is on someone else.

“My real big reason for doing it, is my little brother Colton,” said Hayden Hurt.

Hayden’s 8-year-old brother Colton was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019.

“As a big brother that was hard, just trying to find ways to help him,” said Hirt.

He didn’t feel like there was much he could do, until he became a candidate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Student of the Year.”

“It’s not something you want to see anybody go through. And this is just what I could do to help,” said Hirt.

Through fundraisers at restaurants, t-shirt sales, and a cornhole tournament at chicken and pickle on April 13th (which is open to anyone!), his team is raising money to help find a cure.

The fundraiser will close at the end of this month. And that’s when Hayden will find out if his team won. But win or lose…

“Just knowing that we’ve raised all this money, myself, my team, and just all the other teams in the area, raising the money just knowing that it’s going to a good cause and to helping people like Colton,” said Hirt.

“It’s made me so happy just to see him get better. And to know that what we are doing now, is providing an opportunity for another person, another little kid, another Colton to be able to have the treatment and the things that we’ve gotten just battling cancer,” said Hirt.

KAKE News and the DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers are honored to present Hayden and his team with a $500 check as this week’s “Wins for Kansas” recipient.

“We just want to thank DeVaughn James and KAKE for having us get this money. It’s a big deal to us, and it will be going towards our fundraiser and our fight against cancer. I really appreciate everything DeVaughn James has done for us and KAKE, so just thank you!” said Hirt.
